Chronic Respiratory Diseases as a Risk Factor for Herpes Zoster Infection
CONCLUSIONS: In a standard clinical practice setting, the most prevalent respiratory diseases (asthma, COPD and lung cancer) are related to a higher risk of HZ and PHN. These data are fundamental to assess the potential impact of vaccination in this population.PMID:37734964 | DOI:10.1016/j.arbres.2023.08.010

Monitoring, prophylaxis, and treatment of infections in patients with MM receiving bispecific antibody therapy: consensus recommendations from an expert panel
Blood Cancer J. 2023 Aug 1;13(1):116. doi: 10.1038/s41408-023-00879-7.ABSTRACTBispecific antibodies (BsAbs) are emerging as an important novel class of immunotherapeutic agents for the treatment of multiple myeloma (MM), and are set to be more widely used in clinical practice. However, this new class of therapies is associated with a distinct adverse event (AE) profile that includes cytokine release syndrome and immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome, as well as AEs leading to increased infection risk such as cytopenias and hypogammaglobulinemia, and infections themselves. As preliminary data with this clas...

Public health impact of recombinant zoster vaccine for prevention of herpes zoster in US adults immunocompromised due to cancer
This study evaluates the public health impact of recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) relative to no HZ vaccination for the prevention of HZ among adults aged ≥18 years diagnosed with selected cancers in the United States (US). A static Markov model was used to simulate three cohorts of individuals who are IC with cancer (time horizon of 30 years; one-year cycle length): hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients, patients with breast cancer (BC; a solid tumor example), and patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL; a hematological malignancy example). Cohort sizes reflect the estimated annual incidence of each conditio...

Herpes Simplex Virus and Varicella Zoster Virus Infections in Cancer Patients
Viruses. 2023 Feb 5;15(2):439. doi: 10.3390/v15020439.ABSTRACTHerpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella zoster virus (VZV) are alpha herpesviruses that establish life-long latent infection in neuronal ganglia after primary infection. Periodic reactivation of these viruses results in recurrent infections that can have significant impact on patients' quality of life. HSV commonly causes oral and genital mucocutaneous infections whereas VZV is responsible for varicella/chickenpox and herpes zoster/shingles, but cancer patients are at particularly higher risk of complications including disseminated and visceral infections due t...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, February 13th 2023
This study investigated whether taller Polish adults live longer than their shorter counterparts. Data on declared height were available from 848,860 individuals who died in the years 2004-2008 in Poland. To allow for the cohort effect, the Z-values were generated. Separately for both sexes, Pearson's r coefficients of correlation were calculated. Subsequently, one way ANOVA was performed. The correlation between adult height and longevity was negative and statistically significant in both men and women. After eliminating the effects of secular trends in height, the correlation was very weak (r = -0.0044 in men and ...

Clinical and epidemiological aspects of herpes zoster disease in a primary care setting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: A retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Zoster vaccination uptake was low. A national program for adult vaccination, including zoster vaccination, should be developed, and a guideline to direct primary health-care professionals in the management of HZ infections should be implemented.PMID:36618136 | PMC:PMC9810876 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_933_22

Carrier-Free Subunit Nanovaccine Amplifies Immune Responses Against Tumors and Viral Infections
Acta Biomater. 2022 Dec 23:S1742-7061(22)00852-2. doi: 10.1016/j.actbio.2022.12.042. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCodelivering subunit antigens and Toll-like receptor (TLR) molecular adjuvants via nanocarriers can stimulate potent innate and specific immune responses. Simple and effective nanovaccine fabrication is crucial for application. However, most nanovaccines were fabricated by introducing additional delivery materials, increasing safety risk, cost and processing complexity. Herein, a carrier-free nanovaccine was facilely prepared using a TLR1/TLR2 adjuvant, Diprovocim, rich in benzene rings that could interact wit...

Controlled non-randomised before-after study evaluating the impact of a focused recommendation card on vaccination rates of oncological patients-The Easy Vaccination in Oncology (EVO) strategy
CONCLUSION: This easy-to-implement and resource-saving approach has the potential to increase vaccination rates in oncological patients and to have a considerable impact protecting oncological patients from preventable infectious diseases.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was registered at the German Resister for Clinical Studies (DRKS) under DRKS00020118.PMID:36221170 | DOI:10.1111/ecc.13725
